How to Grieve a Breakup: 5 Steps to Let Go and Heal

This is your step-by-step Grief Guide

Step 1: Create Space for Reality

Write down exactly what happened. The truth, not the story you wish happened.
“We broke up because…”
“The relationship made me feel…”
"The signs I ignored were..."

Fantasy lives in silence. Speaking the truth (even just to yourself) breaks the illusion.

Step 2: Make a “Fantasy vs. Reality” List

Split a page in half:
Left side: “What I imagined us becoming”
– The life, the love, the healed version of them
Right side: “What actually happened”
– Our patterns, the pain, the reality of the relationship

Why it works:
Your brain can’t let go of the fantasy until it sees how far it was from the truth.

Step 3: Feel the Grief

This part is uncomfortable but essential.

Give yourself permission to mourn the dream, not just the person.
Cry. Scream. Burn a letter you never sent.
Do something physical that lets your body release the weight.

Why it works:
Grief isn’t a mental decision, it’s emotional digestion. You can’t skip it.

Step 4: Find Closure Through Meaning (Not Contact)

Instead of chasing answers from them, ask:
“What did this relationship show me about myself?”
“What parts of me am I reclaiming now?”
Write it down or say it out loud.

Why it works:
Closure doesn’t come from their apology. It comes from your understanding.

Step 5: Anchor Into the Present

Every time you spiral into “what if” or “we could’ve been…”
Say out loud:
“That’s a fantasy, that wouldn’t have happened. I’m living in reality now.”
Then do something grounding:
– Go for a walk without your phone
– Hold an ice cube in your hand
– Play music and move your body

Why it works:
It pulls you out of past loops and brings your nervous system back here, where healing happens.
